We have taken the Comparative Analysis to the next level by putting the power of the PCC database in your hands in a format you are already familiar with - an Excel spreadsheet. The huge volumes of data submitted to PCC each month are rolled up into an easy to use report called ProfitMark. All of your historical performance data are compiled into the same familiar format you are accustomed to seeing in the monthly Comparative Analysis reports, but in an interactive format wherein you can select the year, month and type of cattle you want to include in the analysis. Your ProfitMark report also includes all of the regions or capacity groups you have asked to be compared against in the past into a single report.

The Big Picture

It is sometimes difficult to put each month's closeout performance in perspective relative to historical performance within your yard, much less relative to regional history. ProfitMark makes this an easy task by taking each report item and presenting it in an interactive graph using Microsoft Excel's pivot charts and tables. This makes it possible for you to customize the presentation to the time frame and type of cattle you need to analyze.

For Example

The first table is a "Comparative Analysis" for two feedyards and a company average compared against a national and two regional averages. In this example "Year", "Month" and "ReportLabel" (cattle type/sex/weight) were selected from the drop-down lists.

In addition to these comparisons, historical reports consisting of a table and a chart are created for the closeout information as far back as PCC has data. In the next two screenshots the total cost of gain for steers weighing over 800 lbs was selected. This compares two years (2005 and 2009) by month between two sister feedyards, the company average and the Central Plains region. We could have easily selected a different sex, cattle type and weight group as well as different years, specific months, different regions or the national average.

The beauty of the Profit Mark report is in its ability to compare any number of possible combinations quickly and easily by simply clicking on a down arrow and selecting the items of interest. Data are automatically presented as a table and as a line chart enabling the user to see the actual numbers and make a visual comparison. A feedyard manager tells us he uses the ProfitMark report to create tables and charts for his board meetings. Instead of taking a week to pull data together, it takes him about 15 minutes to go through the most recent ProfitMark report and simply print the information he needs.

Added Benefits

  • History tends to repeat itself. Be more aware of normal seasonality both regionally and for your yard. Plot your yard's historical performance against the seasonal patterns of a region or similar capacity group to better understand if a drop in performance was local to your feedyard or was everyone experiencing the same challenges such as weather or market conditions that affected performance across the board.
  • Quickly bring new employees or consultants up to speed on "normal" performance levels in your yard.
  • Set and review quarterly objectives for health and consumption based on previous performance of the yard. Then adjust objectives at review time based on regional performance.
  • Easily assemble professional looking annual reports for board meetings or customer appreciation days showing how your feedyard has historically performed com`pared to your peers.
  • Quickly access your historical data for a particular type and weight of cattle for projecting more accurate breakevens.
